Embed Audio using RelatedSound Tag

Hi everyone... total newbie here...

From what I understand, EXIF has the capability to hold sound files in the form of .wav audio.... I took a look and I'm guessing it would go under the RealtedSound field. I've looked high and low all across the interwebs for an EXIF editor that would allow me to assign/embed a wav file into the EXIF data and ExifToo seems like my best bet.

So my first question is, does it actually support this function?
Am I misunderstanding how this tag can be used (ie: you can't actually embed the audio file, you can only include a link to it)
And if ExifTool does support embedding audio, how would I go about assigning/embedding a .wav file into the EXIF data?
Any help or suggestions are much appreciated..

Thanks in advance!

Phil Harvey

The RelatedSoundFile tag is used to store the audio file name, not the audio itself.

I don't know of any standard way to store audio inside a JPG image.

Hope someone can help

I just got my hands on a Ricoh G700SE data capture camera and have been using exiftool with it. Its been working great, however the G700SE has the capability to capture a Audio clip and i have not been able extract it with out using Ricoh ME1 tool (which only lets me play the file not extract it).

I was wondering if you have come across this type of audio capture before and know how extract it. I do have some support info if you need it.

I do know the file is store in the APP5 area. i can send samples if you need them

thanks

All other cameras I know write a separate audio file and use RelatedSoundFile to store that file name.  I haven't seen embedded audio information, but if you send me a sample I'll take a look.  (philharvey66 at gmail.com)

Hi Phil,

I sent you a sample and a screen shot of the location of the WAV file in the APP5.

Thanks for taking a look

Thanks.  I'll take a look at this tomorrow morning when I can download the file.

Thanks, I got the sample.  I'll see what I can do to extract this information.

ExifTool 9.23 has just been released, and should be able to extract the Ricoh audio data with this command:

exiftool -soundfile -b -w wav image.jpg

This will create a ".wav" file with the same name as the image.

Edit: You mentioned that you had some support info?  Do you have any details about how to identify the audio data in the Ricoh RMETA information?  If so, please let me know because I've had to make a few guesses about how to extract this.

Hey Phil,

The Wav file extraction worked great for my G700SE picture. But, that was only one audio file in the jpg. If I add another audio or move the audio comment to a different field I lose all the audio files that isn't in the correct location. G700SE can add up to 20 comment fields and I presume all 20 could be audio files. I do know that the audio files can only be 30sec long each. If you need any other samples just ask.

sent email also.

Thanks

Right.  This is what I was talking about when I said I had to make some guesses.

If you have information about RMETA format, please let me know.  But more samples would be very useful... with samples for the points you mentioned (multiple audio, moved to a different location, maximum number of audio files, etc).  I should be able to figure out how to extract the audio from any images you send.

Thought I would add a link to view a few different HP Camera models I have collected which can record audio and embed a WAV file within the FPXR extension. Exiftool correctly identifies an Audio Stream, but it would be cool to see some details of the stream.

Thorsted,

I looked at a couple of the images in your link, and none contained any audio data.

All the Camera models except the C200 have Audio embedded in some of the JPG's. I should indicate which ones, but there is at least one in each group.
