I recently went on a trip with a DSLR , probably took a around a thousand photos. In my pocket was a phone. So I can now go to google location history and download my route. I'd like to use this to tag all my photos. The various searches I've done how and about suggest
this is a 'non-standard format' . So my questions are:

1: Has support been added for this in exiftool (or is this a religious war?)
2: Failing that has anyone written the necessary XSLT to make exiftool happy ?

Does the KML file contain timestamp information?  If not, there is no way to do what you want.  But if it does, then exiftool should be able to do this (and if it doesn't, I'll add the ability).

...where DIR is the name of a directory/folder containing the images.  On Mac/Linux, use single quotes (') instead of double quotes (") around arguments containing a dollar sign ($).
