Hi,

the makernotes:PentaxModelID for a K-5IIs is currently "Unknown (0x12f71)".

For this model a number of other metadata also is unknown. I will work my way through and report later.

Open unknown items:

  • AFPointSelected
  • AFPointsInFocus
  • ShakeReduction

Phil Harvey

SWEEET!!  I'm excited to see this new Pentax camera.

Thanks!

- Phil

Edit:  I downloaded some samples from the Pentax web site and both the K-5 II and K-5 II s have ID's 0x12f70 :( -- where did you get your sample?

From picture files out of the camera that lies on my table here (since lunch time) ...

ShakeReduction:

SR off: (no change = 4)
SR on: Unknown 135

AFPointSelected:

My reference positions (the letters are for the AF sensors:
-BCD-
AEFGK
-HIJ-

If in "Select AF Point" Mode:

A : 4/0
B : 1/0
C : 2/0
D : 3/0
E : 5/0
F : 6/0
G : 7/0
H : 9/0
I : 10/0
J : 11/0
K : 8/0

If "Fixed Center" is selected: 65534/0

If Auto 5 or Auto 11 is selected: 65535/0

Phil Harvey

Nice.  I'm envious.

Thanks for the information!

I've added the new ShakeReduction value.

It seems that the AFPointSelected is the same as the current decoding except that there are 2 numbers and the 2nd is always 0.  I will add support for this.

These changes will appear in ExifTool 9.04

The AFPointsInFocus is difficult. Sometimes there is a known value, e.g. "bottom", sometimes "Unknown (21)" and "Unknown (34)".

Phil Harvey

Also it seems as if the level sensor information is different (LevelOrientation, PitchAngle, RollAngle). :(

No. Not on my cam. All three seem perfectly fine as far as I can see with v9.03.

Phil Harvey

This is great news, thanks for checking.  This is one drawback of downloading pre-production samples from the manufacturer's web site -- often the metadata isn't finalized yet.  (As we already saw for the incorrect PentaxModelID in the K-5IIs images)

I can offer a load of comparative shot DNGs (4 K-5 shots and 6 K-5IIs ones) so you can check the metadata and more (beware this is 220 MB):

PENTAX-K-5-II-s---50mm-F4----ISO-80.DNG
PENTAX-K-5-II-s---50mm-F5-6----ISO-80.DNG
PENTAX-K-5-II-s---50mm-F8----ISO-80.DNG
PENTAX-K-5-II-s---50mm-F11----ISO-80.DNG
PENTAX-K-5-II-s---50mm-F16----ISO-80.DNG
PENTAX-K-5-II-s---50mm-F22----ISO-80.DNG
PENTAX-K-5---50mm-F4----ISO-80.DNG
PENTAX-K-5---50mm-F5-6----ISO-80.DNG
PENTAX-K-5---50mm-F8----ISO-80.DNG
PENTAX-K-5---50mm-F11----ISO-80.DNG

More as a little personal joke aside I also have a K-5IIs JPG shot from this morning:

Thanks!!  I was going to give you some time to play with your new toy before I asked for some samples. :)

I'll download them Monday when I'm back on a fast internet connection.

I was passing by work so I dropped in to download these files.  Unfortunately, the host you use seems to require installation of a download manager, which: 1) I don't think they have a Mac version, and 2) I wouldn't install anyway. :(

If you could possibly email me one DNG and one JPG sample that would be great.  My mail is philharvey66 at gmail.com

Sorry for that. Firefox under Windows needs no software install - its just a simple download. I am totally with you that this would be no path forward.

I'll check if I have a mail account which can handle this amount of data.

Phil Harvey

I just tried Firefox too (on the Mac).  When I wait for the timer to allow the free download, then clicking on any of the download buttons just downloads iLividSetup.exe

But thanks, I got the 2 files you sent in the mail! :)

More info on the AFPointSelected:
The second number switches from 0 to 1 if focus mode is AF.C and AFPointMode is Select and extended tracking focus points are enabled in the settings.

And some Info on AFPointsInFocus:
22 = center, center
21= mid-left, center (position E in my post above)

mid-right, center  is unchanged
upper-left, top is unchanged
bottom, center is unchanged

As a little area for improvement an feature request I would suggest you apply a more constant naming convention. Sometimes you first name the row then the column and sometimes its column first then row...

Thanks.  For now I have noted this as a comment in the code until we can figure out what to call this.

I don't understand your "Center, Center".  For this tag, there may be 2 points in focus, but "Center" can't be in focus twice:

22 = Center (1 point in focus) ?
21 = Mid-left, Center (2 points in focus) ?

Also, in the DNG sample you mailed me there was a value of 34 here, so there are more missing values.

I don't understand this either.  Isn't the row always listed first?  Maybe there is confusion for AFPointsInFocus there are 2 points in focus for some of these values.
