You might be interested that the Windows software PIE now uses ExifTool.
As a pure metadata reader it is free, and it has a nice GUI with other features.

The hardest part of the ExifTool integration was to keep it speedy.. however I am quite satisfied with it.

...where DIR is the name of a directory/folder containing the images.  On Mac/Linux/PowerShell, use single quotes (') instead of double quotes (") around arguments containing a dollar sign ($).
