Unable to download Windows Executable ....

Hi,

I have tried on numerous occasions over the past 2 days to download the Windows Executable (exiftool-9.53.zip) without success ...  :(

The download trundles along at about 7KB/s and then halts part-way through (at about 30%), or if it completes after many, many minutes, the zip file is corrupt.

I regularly download similar files without any issues, so I don't think that it is anything that I am doing wrong.  I have tried both Firefox and IE (latest versions of both).

Cheers,

Taipan

I suggest trying again.  I had another report of slow response from the web server recently.  Probably some sort of network slow-down.  But as far as I can tell the network here is fine now.

I was talking to one of my coworkers.  He notice that the Queen's internet was really slow too.  Perhaps there were too many students streaming video of the Olympics.  If so, the problem should be gone now.

Hi Phil,

Unfortunately, the problem persists ....  :(

I tried to download the Windows executable a few minutes ago and the download took about 6 minutes and then aborted at about 50% - the resulting zip file was 1.8 MB instead of 3.7 MB.

Is this file hosted somewhere else that is more reliable, or are you able to email the file to me, please?

Cheers,

Taipan

Hi Taipan,

The file is picked up by a number of file sharing services, but I can't vouch for any of them.  Try googling for "download exiftool windows" and narrow you search to the last week or month to weed out the old versions.

If you aren't successful, send a mail to me (philharvey66 at gmail.com), and I'll mail it to you tomorrow.

I suggest trying the alternate server: http://130.15.24.87/~phil/exiftool/

The download link at this site: http://www.exiftool.org/ seems damaged.

Thanks ryerman.  I can't explain why it seems damaged.  I downloaded all of the files locally, and they were all good.  You don't have the same problem with the alternate server?  Someone does have 3 large simulation jobs running on the main server, but that doesn't affect performance noticeably when downloading locally.

- Phil

Edit: I just downloaded http://www.exiftool.org/exiftool-9.53.zip from a remote computer (about 600 km away, but still in Canada).  The download took 1.1 seconds and the file was fine (the MD5 checksum was 18fb8e02ca099ea78c3d44111653003c, which is correct).

If someone outside of Canada can test this and verify the MD5 checksum, I would be thankful.

Hi Phil
There is a huge difference between servers when I'm downloading.
The alternate server allows all files to be downloaded quickly (< 5 seconds).
From the main server, the downloads all start quickly but then stall for minutes before resuming for a few seconds and then stalling again.
Maybe they will complete eventually, but I haven't waited. My experience seems to confirm the symptoms as Taipan reports above.

Also, this forum site is relatively sluggish at times.  Not unusable, but "hesitant" when clicking on links.

Aren't simulations notorious for being resource hogs?
If you want, I'll try again after you tell me that the server is "liberated".

Thanks Jim,

I can't see that the simulations are the problem for 2 reasons:  1) they are only using 3 of 8 cores, and only 30% of the physical memory, and 2) I can download the files normally.

So there must be something else going on.  Another possibility is that the MIME type is set wrong for ZIP files on the main server (this would be a server configuration problem, but I can't see why this should have changed).  This could potentially affect only Windows systems because a text-mode download will corrupt the file in Windows but not other systems, and I have only been testing from Unix-based systems.  I'll try to investigate further.

It seemed instantaneous here in Barbados.  Checksum looks OK.

alan@egremont:Downloads$ md5 exiftool-9.53.zip
MD5 (exiftool-9.53.zip) = 18fb8e02ca099ea78c3d44111653003c

Edit:  But I did download it to a MacBook.

Phil Harvey

Thanks Alan,  this narrows things down a bit.

Well, it isn't the MIME type problem.  I just tried downloading from a Windows XP machine here (using the Safari web browser), and downloaded exiftool-9.53.zip, and unzipped and ran it with no problems.

So much for that theory.

I can't think of anything else that could affect only the main server for out-of-country downloads from Windows sytems.

I'm in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, just down the road from Kingston.

OK then.  I can't see any common factor with the affected systems.  Unless it affects only IE, or only Windows 7, but that would be a long shot.  And it would be hard to explain why the main web site is affected, but not the alternate site.

Just looking to see if the ip of my proxy server shows on this message ...

Ok, it does.  I'll try to download via England ...

Firefox estimated about a minute and it seemed to take about that long.  My upload speed from Raspberry Pi (my everything server!) is not very fast.
