I am feeling a bit stupid, but I have to have some help with decrypting which date is which... The numbers above are from a picture (...) and I am trying to figure out what date the picture was taken. It could be 2013 02 16 I guess, or is that date connected with the XMP "application"?

Or is it this that actually shows when somebody pushed the trigger?

Yes, I am a newbie when it comes to this.
Thanks for any answers!

It is the XMP-Photoshop:DateCreated that should correspond to the date/time the picture was taken.  The camera stores this as EXIF:DateTimeOriginal, which is mapped to the specified tag in XMP according to convention.

Ah, ok thanks for quick respond!

So the other dates, like "modify Date" are connencted to XMP in it self, so to say?

Phil Harvey

EXIF also has tags corresponding to the XMP ModifyDate and CreateDate, but these aren't the date/time that the picture was taken.

Ok... I think I´m starting to understand... One final qustion if its ok?
What are those other dates? Are they somehow connected with the picture, or are they rather connected with software?
If they are connected with the picture, I dont understand how the dates can be prior to when the picture was taken.

Hi,
by looking at the times I would say 2013:02:16 19:47:24 is the date/time the picture was taken. The others dates, especially the IPTC "Date Created" seems corrupted form me (xmp-photoshop might be a derivation of IPTC).

What does EXIF:DateTimeOriginal say?  XMP and IPTC records usually are created when software had touched (edited and saved) a file.
Another possibility would be the camera's date/times was set wrong, but since HH:MM:SS are equal to the last second in "Create Date" and "Date Created", I strongly doubt this.

Joerg

See the EXIF specification for details about the meanings of these tags.

Now I think I got it, finally...

It is obviously that just staring at dates can be "dangerous". Especially when you dont know exactly what they mean.

But after reading your link Phil and reading here: http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/xmp/sdk/XMPspecification.pdf
I guess I´ve got it.

All the prior dates to 2013:11:06 (from the picture) are dates connected with applications and their history, kind of. Simple as that...
(Btw, this is the "Date/Time Original : 2013:11:06 19:47:24+00:00"...)

I´m sorry if that was just what you said Phil and I just could not grip that... :)

Thanks for input Phil and Joel and thanks for a great tool!
