Hi ,

I'm using Exiftool for al lang time now and its great !
But i like to know what the distance is to my object , for example a bird on a pole . where can i find the distance (in meters) in Exiftool ?

i see something like FocusdistanceUpper and FocusdistanceLower but the value is completly different . the first is 39.36 en the second is 30.88 meters..
I dont know if this has something to do with the object distance .
so i hope someone can explain it clearly to me ..

thx.. Bennie

Hi Bennie,

Most cameras do not calculate an accurate focus distance.  For Canon cameras, the best you can do is to take an average of FocusDistanceUpper and FocusDistanceLower.  The actual subject distance is completely unknown of course (ie. the subject may not be in focus).

...where DIR is the name of a directory/folder containing the images.  On Mac/Linux/PowerShell, use single quotes (') instead of double quotes (") around arguments containing a dollar sign ($).

Hi Phil,

thx for your reply, I will take an average of those 2 values . i didnt know that the camera isnt accurate with the focus distance ..
