Hi Phil,

I'm trying to find tags for the various switches (e.g, A/M-M/A-M, VR Tripod Mode, etc.) on some of my lenses. While I did not find what I was after, I did notice that tag [MakerNotes:Nikon] Nikon 0x00bc looks like it may be another directory block like tag (it very much looks like it starts with a version number followed by data, similar to e.g., ShotInfo* and ColorBalance*), but that exiftool does not yet decode this into separate values. If so, perhaps this is something that can added?

Hi Hayo,

Thanks.  Yes, there are a number of blocks that are not yet decoded.  Specifically, 0x00bc has be reported as NEF metering image or auto whitebalance pattern or something, which is not yet extracted by ExifTool.

Pity, from the discussion thread, I gather that it isn't a "standard" TIFF directory block, but more a bunch of fixed size/order tags. Pity because that makes it harder to decode :( If it was a standard block, you could at least show the individual tags as unknown, which may give a clue as to what they are... But if it is indeed some sort of image (e.g., for white balance or metering), then the value of extracting it is limited anyway (I think).

I'll do some more experimenting to see if I can find some more tags for e.g., the new D500 (is there anything in particular you know you don't know yet?).

Cheers,
Hayo

Recently a number of D500 tags have been added, so we're in pretty good shape for this model.  Off the top of my head the only thing I can think of that is likely missing are the external flash settings, but these are complex and difficult to decode, and with very little reward, so I wouldn't suggest you work on these unless you are super keen and own multiple external flash units.

Hi Phil,

Ok, I won't waste time on that, I think ;)

Just tried (again) to see if the various switches on my 600mm lens were communicated at all to the body (but now with my D500 instead of the D4). Doesn't look like it though. For one, I had hoped it would show the value of Tripod Mode VR versus Normal Mode VR, but alas it doesn't :(

The only (non-explained) changes I get are in the 0x00bc tag, but this is not likely to hold what I am after :(

For reference, I used the command exiftool -a -G0:1 -e -n -U --Nikon_Shot* --Nikon_ColorBalance* --Nikon_AFInfo* --File:System:* --StripOffsets --ModifyDate --DateTimeOriginal --JPGFromRaw* --StripByteCounts --OtherImage* --CreateDate --SubSecTime* --ShutterCount --FileNumber --PreviewImage* to gather the full info (excluding "always" changing tags).
