Cannot updated embedded previewimage inside dng (raw)

The dng file has an embedded preview and I was able to extract it using "-b" option. But when I try to update it, I get following error:
exiftool "-previewimage <=180293PHC_0089b_preview.jpg" 180293PHC_0089b.DNG
Warning: [minor] Not a valid image for File:PreviewImage
    0 image files updated
    1 image files unchanged

Any thing I'm missing?

I received above error for ExifTool v10.00.
I updated to 10.60 and was able to update the previewimage fine.
