dear forum,
for 2 days i'm struggling with renaming a file to the date the picture was taken.
I'm using the cmd and windows 7 for this.
exiftool "-filename<CreateDate" -d %y%m%d_%H%M%S_%%-c.%%le -r december2015
The program gives the prompt:
1 directories scanned
29 files updated
then I check the windows filename and they are still the same as before, but exiftool cannot find the images by their windows filename and only accepts the new filename
If I execute the original filename in the command window, the image opens as expected
If I call exiftool with the windows file name it prompts: can not find specified file
If I call exiftool with the new filename, it gives all the details of the picture including the new filename in the tag
Can someone please shed some light on this?
Hi,
I tried your command with some files I have, and it works for me. But I don't understand what you mean by If I execute the original filename in the command window.
From what you describe, it could be that the files are renamed, but perhaps your display is not updated. The same sometimes happens to me; some program renames the files, but Windows Explorer displays the old name. The solution is to force a refresh of the window.
Did you try right-click / Refresh in your Windows Explorer window (the GUI, not the cmd terminal)? Hitting the F5 key also works.
For us to help you more, you could run the following three commands and report the results here:
dir
exiftool "-filename<CreateDate" -d %y%m%d_%H%M%S_%%-c.%%le -r december2015
dir
Martin
Martin has a good suggestion, except you should specify the directory name for the "dir" command:
dir december2015
exiftool "-filename<CreateDate" -d %y%m%d_%H%M%S_%%-c.%%le -r december2015
dir december2015

exiftool -T -filename -createdate -aperture -shutterspeed -iso december2015 > out.txt
the result is:

Even after a reboot and a shutdown and startup it still shows the original filenames in Windows explorer
I should maybe mention that I have used the "bulk rename utility" before to change the file names in that way. |Thats what started all the problems in the first place :)
Wow. That is weird. I seems as if Windows somehow maintains two names for each file.
Just to confirm: If you add -filesize# to your exiftool command, are the sizes you see the same as from the "dir" command?
What version of ExifTool are you using? If it is recent (version 10 or later), try downloading version 9.78 (https://exiftool.org/exiftool-9.87.zip) to see how it behaves. If it is an older version, then try downloading the current version.

It's really weird
I tried running using cmd with administrator access, but no success either
I tried running the older version and I got a pop up from my virusscanner Comodo.
I told the Virus program to trust the application: SUCCESS!!!!
I assume it has to do with the application running in an isolated environment
Thans everyone for the fast replies
I wonder if the new version of ExifTool would have worked with the virus software disabled.
But at least you have it working now.
