So, I learned the hard way transfering with Nikon Transfer 1.5.3 messed up my now-deleted-off-the-SDcard NEF files. I was elated to learn that this tool can help me get the precious files back. I downloaded version 2.3, and tried to use it. Soon as it starts, it immediately crashes.

Help please!

Crashes?  Are there any messages?

A straight crash should only be caused by a corrupted installation.  Try deleting the temporary files and running it again.  (See the exiftool Windows uninstall instructions for help locating the temporary files.)

Thanks for the response. I'm not aware of any installation other than extracting the .exe file, and dragging a corrupted NEF file on to it. Once I drag an NEF file on to the .exe file, I put in 12 or 14, and it immediately says, "fix_corrupted_nef has stopped working". I tried on both a Windows 7 and Windows 8 computer. I removed the par-user directory, but the error is still there.

Am I missing something? Or is there a place for me to download previous versions to try... in case it's just this executable having issues?

Phil Harvey

The application is a packaged collection of Perl files that automatically unpacks in a temporary directory.  If it unpacks correctly you could get this problem.  Try erasing the temporary files as I suggested.

Could I possibly get an older version to try? I did delete the par-user folder, and then deleted the entire temp folder, but same result. Does version 2.3 work for everyone else but me?

Phil Harvey

You can download version 2.1 here.  I don't have a version of 2.2 on the server.

I'll have to re-verify that 2.3 works for me when I get back next week.  I did test it before the release, but it could be that the release is corrupted somehow.

That was it!! Thank you so much!!!

Yeah, looks like 2.3 was the issue.

I have re-generated and re-uploaded the Windows version of fix_corrupted_nef 2.3.  It should be fine now.
