Thanks!  Sigma is really inconsistent about where the "APO" goes in the name.  To be consistent with other Sigma lenses in the Canon list, I will use this name:

Sigma 180mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO Macro

It is interesting that this lens already exists in the list with an ID of 183.  But yours has an ID of 255.  Life would be a lot easier if these companies could be more consistent.

This will appear in ExifTool 9.85 as "Sigma AF 180mm f/4.0 Macro".

Hi Phil,

I just tried 9.85, but it is still shown as "Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM | A". Did I make a mistake?

Phil Harvey

Could you send me a sample image so I can take a look?  My email is philharvey66 at gmail.com.  Thanks.

Hi Phil, I send you a link, because the RAW-File is to big.

It seems, that Capture One Pro 8 doesn't write the Info of the Lens in the metadata? I send also a jpg, exported from Capture One.

Phil Harvey

It will be tuesday before I can download the raw file, but I will post back then with my findings.

Hi Phil. Thanks for looking in that problem.  :)

I got your sample.  ExifTool 9.85 works as expected for me:

> exiftool ~/Desktop/2015-02-12\ -\ XR2A7561.CR2 -exiftoolversion -'*lens*'
ExifTool Version Number         : 9.85
Lens Type                       : Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM | A or Other Sigma Lens
Lens Info                       : 180mm f/0
Lens Model                      : 180mm
Lens Serial Number              : 0000000000
Lens                            : 180.0 mm
Lens ID                         : Sigma 180mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO Macro
Lens                            : 180.0 mm (35 mm equivalent: 174.7 mm)

It is LensID that you should be looking at.  The LensType is ambiguous, and LensID is a Composite tag that attempts to identify the specific lens model.

Hi Phil,

now I see my mistake. Sorry, Phil. I'll write Phase one, that they should export the metadata.

"Sigma 300mm F2.8 EX DG APO IF" (the one with screwdrive, no HSM)
for Pentax
shows as "Unknown (3 42)".

I am not really sure about the naming conventions for this glass.

Phil Harvey

Thanks.  Sigma is somewhat inconsistent in its naming conventions, specifically where the "APO" goes.  In a majority of lenses it seems to come after the F-number.  Googling for this lens on a Pentax mount (without HSM) yields many hits with APO after the F-number, but no "IF".  The "IF" version seems very rare, however the naming is the same you gave, so I'll use this.

Batty

Hi Phil, just tried out my new Nikon "AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR" lens, and Exiftool displays this for the Lens ID:

Lens ID                         : Unknown (AE 3C 80 A0 3C 3C C9 0E)

Phil Harvey

Hi Batty,

Thanks.  This lens should already be recognized by the current version of ExifTool (10.02).
