How do I tell if a NEF file is losslessly or lossy compressed from the exiftool output

My NEFs have a NEFCompression tag.  You can take a look at that to see if it's what you want. 
"It didn't work" isn't helpful. What was the exact command used and the output.
Read FAQ #3 and use that cmd
Please use the Code button for exiftool output

Please include your OS/Exiftool version/filetype
