Hi Phil,

I'm sorry to hijack the thread.  Happy to create a new one, but thought this is all relevant to the issue at hand.

I've found out what creates these "invalid" CR2's.  It looks like it's all my Canon RAW photos that I download from the camera using my iPhone via USB.  My iPhone synced them to Google Photos, and then I downloaded all my Google Photos via Takeout.

I have thousands of these photos.  Renaming all these files is going to be quite tricky.  I was wondering if you have any other suggestions to handle these files? I'm happy to attach one of the culprits if you are interested in taking a look at what Frankenstein was produced by this process.  What I'm mainly interested in here is to copy the Geo data, and Date Taken from the JSON file into the CR2s I have.

Kind Regards,

StarGeek

Post split from this thread since that thread had nothing to do with CR2 files or Google.

To clarify, you are saying that after downloading the files from Google, they have the wrong file extension?  Because that was what the original thread is about and your post seems to be something else.
"It didn't work" isn't helpful. What was the exact command used and the output.
Read FAQ #3 and use that cmd
Please use the Code button for exiftool output

Please include your OS/Exiftool version/filetype
