What's the status with XMP metadata in EPS files + Adobe Illustrator?

Hello

I know there were some problems in the past. I'm curious if there's any silver lining in this area? Or any alternative way to write XMP metadata to EPS without illustrator.

Phil Harvey

No silver lining yet I'm afraid.  It could be that Adobe's own XMP library has this ability, so you might be successful if you find some tool that uses this.

Would you be so kind to describe (or provide me some references) with exact current behavior of Exiftool with regards to EPS files?

Does it work with EPS10+ and ignore EPS8-?

Phil Harvey

ExifTool will refuse to write XMP to EPS files if it identifies them as Illustrator files.  It will write XMP to any other EPS file.  PostScript tags may be written to Illustrator files, but not XMP.

Phil, are there any updates to this old post regarding modifying XMP metadata in Illustrator-generated EPS files? The functionality that I am specifically looking for is to be able to *remove* XMP metadata from an Illustrator-generated EPS file. If this is not possible, can you suggest any alternatives?

Phil Harvey

I don't know of any alternatives.  Writing Illustrator files was disabled due to a compatibility issue with Illustrator.
