Viewing Flash Related Tags, Sony Camera

Hello to all,

I'm using a the Sony A7IV and the Godox AD100.

I would like to extract the following metadata:
- Flash: if TTL or Manual Flash or No Flash at all was used
- If Manual, the Flash Power i.e. 1/32
- If TTL, any Flash Exposure Compensation
- the Camera Exposure Value

I would like to also be able see other values relating to flash, for example, fill-flash/rear curtain sync, Distance of flash to subject (if it exists).

The most important however are the four mentioned above

I tried the ExifToolGUI and the jExifToolGUI and also saw the reference of Sony tags here:

However, I'm lost on whether its possible, and if yes, on how to derive the above values.
I have been trying to do the above for the past week but I simply cannot figure it out.

I'm not a programmer so if I need to create or edit any config files, please be gentle on the process.

My aim is to create a template that displays the below tags:

- F Number
- ISO
- Shutter Speed (Exposure Time)

- Flash: if TTL or Manual Flash or No Flash at all was used
- If Manual, show the Flash Power
- If TTL, show the Flash Exposure Compensation
- the Camera Exposure Value

Optional:
- Fill-flash/rear curtain sync
- Distance of flash to subject

I would appreciate any help with the above.

The first three are easy, as they are standard EXIF tags
exiftool -EXIF:FNumber -EXIF:ISO -EXIF:ExposureTime /path/to/files/

The others may be in the EXIF data, or they may be in the Makernotes. And such data has different names depending upon the actual camera make and model, or they may not exist at all.

For this, you'll have to figure out the names and add them to the above list. You would use this command (a variation on the one in FAQ #3)
exiftool -G -a -s -EXIF:all -MakerNotes:all /path/to/files/

Look through the resulting output for the exact data you want. Then add that tag name to the above command.

So thereafter I ran the exiftool on two photos, one taken with TTL/FEC and the other with Manual Flash.

FlashpixVersion can be ignored, it's an old, obsolete standard, but it still appears in some cameras. See the FlashPix tag page for more details.

The problem is, camera companies don't publish the details of their MakerNotes, and some go to considerable lengths to hide their metadata by obfuscating it. Most of the knowledge of these tags are done in exactly that way, take a picture, check the file, change a setting, repeat.

Maybe, Maybe not. It's always possible that the data hasn't been located. You can use the -u (-unknown) option to check to see if it might be there. There are almost always unknown tags in the Makernotes.

The first command will already give you every known tag in the file. There's no need to check any individual tags on that page.

If you change -G to -G1, that will give more details on the groups the tags belong to. Sony tags should have [Sony] or [SonyIDC], and EXIF tags will have IFD in the group name.

I did a few tests and it seems that indeed the
"Flash: On, Return not detected" = Manual flash
"Flash: On, Return detected" = TTL flash

However, with regard to the values of Flash Power in Manual mode and Flash Exposure Compensation in TTL, I don't believe it is possible.

I made a comparison excel sheet that compares the values of a TTL vs Manual Flash taken photo. I tried both the -u and -U commands

The only value that might be useful is the 0xb048 FlashLevel

however upon requesting, the returned value is "Normal" instead of an integer. Is there perhaps, a way to return the actual integer value?

For the 0x0104- FlashExposureComp-rational64s, the returned value is always 0 (for both TTL and Manual Flash shot photos)

exiftool -n -MakerNotes:FlashLevel still return a 0 value, assuming that the command is correct.

Perhaps there's no other value stored except 0?
