exiftool with macOS Automator / Apple Script

I have recently used exiftool in an Automator workflow for macOS X Catalina. One command was used to extract a JPG preview from a DNG file and another command was used to copy the DNG orientation tag to the extracted JPG.

...where DIR is the name of a directory/folder containing the images.  On Mac/Linux/PowerShell, use single quotes (') instead of double quotes (") around arguments containing a dollar sign ($).

"It didn't work" isn't helpful. What was the exact command used and the output.
