using the FILENAME to change the DATE TAKEN

i have 1000's of scanned slides, each has a date taken of the date that the scan took place. i want to change these using the filename i gave them. the first component of the filename is the date the pic was actually taken in the format YYYYMMDD.

is this possible?

can it be done for a large batch???
