Howdy,

This is likely a newbie question...is there a "standard" list of EXIF tags?  I see differences and commonalities between the few that I have pulled from Canon PowerShot and my iPhone.  I'm assuming the tag names (Keywords, Subject, Rating, Categories, Date/Time Original) are all irrelevant as long as they are added to the file in the proper format/location.

Thanks!

Hi David,

The EXIF specification lists the official standard EXIF tags, but most of the tags you mention are actually in the IPTC and/or XMP information, which again have their respective standards.

Of course, having various standards leads to confusion in cases where the same information may be stored in different formats, and this is where the MWG (Metadata Working Group) recommendations come into play.  ExifTool documents some of this in the respective sections of the Tag Name documentation.
