Hi!

I uses a couple of days to read the Exif standards, Google desc. etc.
What did I want, and I Think that that is it what everybody wants is: Add Informations in the Audio, Videofiles, to be able to search or sort them with the Explorer.

So I like to save the files somewhere on the HDD. And add Informations like:

Album name, Artist, undoppled Album name (for Mixed albums); but also produce time, Main Artist, other Artist (movies), Content, better genre.

Of cause, Movies and Musik, and Pictures are different. But it is restrictive to use "standard field Names"!

So where do I find them?

Regards Carsten  :P

Adobe bridge may be used to write metadata to many video files, and maybe audio too (but I haven't tried).

I'm afraid I don't know what you mean by "standard field names" being restrictive.

Thanks for request.

My english is not the best. So lets try again.

In ms Explorer i am able to add columns for exif datas.

So if I make my own fieldnames like "Hauptdarsteller" or "Darsteller" - i could not find them in the exprorer.

So how to i find in my tv recordings that "John Wayne" was an Artist in that film.

=> I have to find the right fieldname. And thats what i also not find in the exif cooperation. So I ask you. I counld not think that i am the only on with this question.

Regards.

I don't think I can be much help here.  I've never done that in Explorer.

Maybe someone who knows Windows better can help.

Hi Carsten,

I'll try.  I'm no expert but just someone who has muddled his way through some of the tagging world.

It sounds as if you are interested in audio/visual files more than photos.
Video files might accept EXIF tags (I'm not sure) but EXIF tags are inappropriate for audio files.  ID3 tags are commonly used for MP3 audio files. Others are ASF tags for WMA files, Vorbis tags for FLAC files, and APE tags for APE files. Many audio tag editors can write and read then all.  Definitions and specifications may be found by examining the appropriate standards.

First, a warning.  Windows Explorer and Windows Media Player are very bad choices to edit metadata for any file type.  There are many reports of them destroying existing audio or video metadata.
A better choice is to use ExifTool for image files and Mp3tag for audio files.  I'm not sure about video but I believe Explorer displays only technical information about AVI files (for example) but no metadata about content.

However, you could make a copy of a typical file, edit the metadata with Windows Explorer, and then read the metadata with ExifTool to discover the tag names.  Then use some other tag editor to process your saved files.  As you discovered, custom tags (fieldnames) are not used by Explorer.

There are 2 ways to edit metadata (called Details by Windows) in Explorer:
1. In the Details Pane
Expose the Details Pane (Click on Organize, mouseover Layout, toggle the checkmark beside Details Pane). Drag the upper border of the Details Pane to enlarge it and make it easier to see the information. Click on a file in Explorer.  In the Details Pane, mouseover the right-hand parts of the displayed information and observe that data entry structures are exposed for some lines. Click on the one you want to edit and observe the Save and Cancel buttons that appear. Make additions or changes and click Save.
2. In the Properties dialogue.
Right click on a file and choose Properties.  Click on the Details tab.  Move the mouse down the Value column and observe that a data entry structure is revealed for certain items (eg. album & composers for audio files, title & subject for image files). Click on the one you want to edit. Make additions or changes and click Apply. If the Details Pane is visible the changes will be shown there also.

For audio files (like MP3), the tagname in the Details Pane, the Properties dialogue, and the Explorer details column are the same but these are not necessarily the "real" tagnames. Other tag editors (like Mp3tag) may have different internal tagnames and you would have to experiment to find out which tagname they use that corresponds to the tagname that is used by Windows Explorer.

For image files (like JPEG), the situation is similar.

I am unfamiliar with video files.

Metadata is complex and complicated. Have fun :D

Thanks a lot!

Yes, i mention that in mind. And than i saw Exiftool :)

So I will use ID3 Taks for the mp3 files. But my Flac files will be also unlucky.

So I am back to the beginning.

First I wanted to make a Database, and Include there the Movies as excludes Files. But therefore i can´t find a standard for Pictures (so I will never find a Standard for Movies). I did not discuss no more about Access and SQL.

So I got the Idea to added the information in the Files. Still up to now.

So I stop at this Point, and say thank you for purchastion and look up for better times.

Many Regards

I remind in your Words . . . .   To find a Solution.

There are to ways.

a. to find a higher Container to integrate my Informations. But it has to be a Compatible on.  Maybe WMA? But does that works with DVD Payers or Carradios?

I future I like also integrate "Zoom" and "panorama" Functions for Pictures in Diashows .... later on!

b. all these Files mp3 etc. uses Metha structures, so it should be uncomplicated to add own data´s. In that case it might be necessary to create "tump" files for the Directorys because it need plenty of time to read in all Files (In Explorer of my movies, i have a column "movietime") - thats not fine.

So my Question to You:
What do you Think? Did you have a idea?
