Missing option in version 5

Bogdan,

I tried to use version 5 of ExiftoolGUI and I miss the option 'Import metadata from single file'. When starting with version 4 I had exactly the same problem and I wrote that in the forum on October 29, 2010.

I work mostly with PSD-files. I make a new combination of several photo's and than want the Exif, XMP and IPTC data from the most imported photo copy to the new photo (PSD-file ). In the previous version it must be done with exporting the information to an mie-file and select all data in the special field. After that it was possible to import the mie file in the new psd-file with selecting all data.

Now again this option is gone in version 5.

I hope you will bring back this option, until than I have to work with version 4.

Hi René,

As mentioned elsewhere, when making new GUI (which isn't that often), I'm trying to make it available for users as soon 'basic' options (only) are made. I do that, to get feefback (ie. bug reports) from users at 'initial' stage and if there's something serious to be corrected, it's easier to do that on few options only. This time, this approach was especially important, because totaly new communication between ExifTool and GUI is used.
But truth is, that if nobody would comment missing option you've mentioned, then... you know, there's no point to bother with something that nobody uses  :) -that is, you can expect to see this option in next update.

Hi Bogdan,

While we're on the subject of missing options.  I think the option to produce a graph of focal length/aperture, etc is missing in v5 too.  This was a feature that may not have been often used, but I think it was very useful to have.

Hi Phil,

Yes, I agree about graphs. These chart components used in GUIv4 aren't my work -they have been given for free and at that time, it sounded like "giveaway" software -so I though, this is because these components have become "old" or developers "dropped" the project, etc. Yes, I could try to adapt stuff for new Delphi, but that would require quite some work... or I could try to find something simiral for free...
Anyway, I have just checked at www.riversoftavg.com and I'm happy to see, that free offer continues for Delphi XE2 as well  :) Ok, I need some time to see "what's about", but now I can at least say, that one day, GUIv5 will have graphs too.

Great! :)

I know you are spending a lot of time on the "Workspace" addition to the GUI - just curious if restoring the "Charts" is on the horizon?

Thanks

BogdanH

Hi,

As it seems, I can't push that by side anymore.. so, if nothing extraordinary happens, I'll try to implement Charts in next update... in a week or so?
Actually I did think about this and one thing I couldn't decide about was: should Chart be displayed in separate window as in GUI v4? (I'm in doubt, because I hate "separate" windows cluttered around). I'm more inclined to add additional tab nearby Filelist. That is, Filelist and Charts would share common space (the same way as Metadata and GoogleMap do) -btw. that's the reason I've added tabs in GUIv5: to avoid separate windows.
I'll try and see...

Bogdan,

Tab (and sharing FileList space) works for me - that way I don't have to reposition the new "Chart" window when it opens.

At this point, what ever is easier for you to implement and maintain in the code.

I am not an experienced user of ExifToolGui, but I have just tried the latest release and I cannot find the command to set a "file create Date" in the Exif.  I can see the commands to modify Exif date / time but not enter Exif information into a scanned file which does not have any Exif Date information.  I used to be able to do this with V4, Help?

Hi Ian,

If image file doesn't contain any Exif metadata, you can create it simply by entering any Exif tag value (Exif DateTime, in this case):
Select file(s),
Select DateTimeOriginal tag in Workspace,
Enter DateTime value on bottom and press Enter key (edited tag will become yellow),
After you're done with editing tags, click on Save button (bottom right) an that's it.

Hopefully I didn't misundrestood your question.

Many thanks - easy when you know how :)

I just want to say thank you for all of your excellent work on ExifToolGUI.

Before I found ExifToolGui I could not find any, of the many, programs that allowed RELIABLE modification of Exif date / Time fields and most would not work at all if the exif information did not already exist (scanned images).

I like the new interface, keep up the good work!

BogdanH

Hi Ian,

Thank you for compliments on GUI. However, when we talk about metadata reliability, all credits goes to ExifTool -and that's why I've decided to make GUI for it  ;)
I'm glad you like new interface... you know, it really is hard to make something simple to use (i.e. for total metadata beginner) and at the same time, "powerfull" enough for advanced users. I think of GUI as "little metadata helper"  :)

Thank you again,
Bogdan

Bogdan,

Just wanted to follow-up and thank you for restoring the "Charts" in the GUI tool.  Nice implementation with the tabs, too.

Also, a general "Thank You" for the continuing support and development, plus your willingness to accept suggestions and requests for new features!
