I've just upgraded to OS X Yosemite, and it was a huge pain to get the forum working again after the upgrade wiped out the forum database. :(

That has done nothing to encourage me to upgrade.

Hi Alan,

If it wasn't for all of the extra Unix software I have installed on this machine, the upgrade would have been easy.  But if you do have Unix software, be sure to move /usr/local to some other location before doing the upgrade, then move it back again afterwards.  That won't solve all of the problems, but it certainly helps.

This looks like it is going to be fun.  I did take a copy of /usr/local as you advised though.

egremont:~ alan$ ls /Library/Perl/5.16/
AppendToPath                Image/
File/                       darwin-thread-multi-2level/
egremont:~ alan$ ls /Library/Perl/5.18/
AppendToPath                darwin-thread-multi-2level/
egremont:~ alan$

Hi Alan,

I didn't say copy it, I said move it out of the way...  The Yosemite install will take forever for some reason if there is a lot of stuff in /usr/local.

With "forever" being infinite.  It seemed to hang so I went to bed.  Restarted the thing in the morning and seems OK now.  Installed new Java then new Java sdk so I could get to my password manager so I can get my apple id so I can download the Yosemite updates.  Not looked at the Perl yet.

This is really stupid, I might as well be running Linux.  Next laptop will be Linux I think with a virtual machine for Windows to run the Nikon software.

Perl should be fine.  I didn't have any problems with that.

The biggest problem with OS X is that apparently they don't consider fringe users (like myself) to be very important.

That's OK now probably.  exiftool wouldn't work so I re-installed.
